Maldives Industrial Fishising Company (MIFCO) has said that the extent of damage in the fire at Kaafu atoll Kanduoiygiri is unclear at this time but the factory was insured.
The company runs an industrial fish village at Kanduoiygiri including two factories that packages MIFCO products.
Managing Director MIFCO, Adlee Ismail told Sun Media that the fire incident today took place at the factory where some of the Fasmeeru brand products were being packed.
Adlee said that the incident took place in a relatively small area of the factory, an area of 100 ft. by 30 ft. used to pack local products and the whole factory was not exposed to the fire.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical short according to the MIFCO MD, and the fire started at the ceiling so it is believed to be an electrical short in one of the light tubes.
He said that the factory was insured but the extent of damages in the fire are unclear at this time.
The Managing Director of the recently moved as a subsidiary of the State Trading Organization (STO), MIFCO said that the heavy machineries at factory were moved out when the fire broke out to prevent damages.
With the factory being a food packing plant, Adlee said that the ceiling, walls and the roof would be replaced at the factory by MIFCO.
The fire at Kanduoiygiri was reported to the MNDF around 2:47 p.m. Following the report, MNDF Fire and Rescue went to the island and controlled the fire within an hour. No one was injured in the incident.
