A contractor has been assigned to build an Islamic center in R. Ungoofaaru in the memory of the Islamic scholar and former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
The project was officially contracted to S G Construction by Ministry of Islamic Affairs in a ceremony held at the ministry headquarters this Thursday morning.
The contract was signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Bagir and Managing Director of S G Construction, Mohamed Shahid.
Ministry of Islamic Affairs reports that the 1,000-people Islamic center is expected to cost MVR 25 million.
The center will have a prayer hall, classrooms and a library.
S G Construction has been contracted to complete the project within 510 days.
Ministry of Islamic Affairs reports the project was contracted to S G Construction via direct negotiation, minus a bidding process.
The agency said government usually opted for direct negotiation for projects which it wanted to expedite, and that companies chosen in such cases were usually parties which had experience in working for the government in projects.
The Islamic center in Ungoofaaru will be the first such building built outside Male’ City.
