The at the MDP hall at “Mathihamage” began at 8:30 p.m. tonight with the area on Boduthakurufaanu Magu closed to the public. After the search, the Police left the scene around 9:30 p.m.

Police Media said that the hall is being searched in suspicion of an attempt to obstruct the visit of the Saudi King, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Police accuses the opposition party of planning a protest during the Saudi King’s visit.

In a statement earlier today, Police warned that activities were being planned to protest upcoming visits by heads of state and foreign dignitaries to Maldives over the coming days, and that such activities will not be tolerated.

MDP has been accusing the government of planning to sell the Faafu atoll to the Saudi Royal Family. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has addressed concern by the opposition saying that the Saudi Arabia wish to conduct a large-scale project in the atoll and no land is being “sold.”

“No one needs to be concerned about not receiving details of the project. It will be revealed once the negotiations are complete,” President Yameen said.
