Construction of clean water and sanitation system in G. A. Kolamaafushi was officially launched on the island last Monday.
The project was contracted to Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) by Ministry of Environment and Energy in May, 2016.
The MVR 57 million project is funded from the State budget and loan assistance from OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
The project includes installing 329 water meters, a 7.1 kilometer water supply network, two 86-ton desalination plants, a 794-ton water production unit, and a 521-ton water storage unit.
Plus, a 5.7 kilometer sanitation network and a 250-ton sewage treatment plant which can double its capacity.
Despite the project being officially launched on Monday, construction of water system has been ongoing since last November, and the company is in the process of install pipes underground for the sanitation system.
