Torrential rain and thunderstorms; yellow alert issued for 2 areas

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued yellow alert to parts of Maldives as it forecasts torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms.

Met issued yellow alert to G. A. Atoll, G. Dh. Atoll and Addu Atoll this Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.

Travel by sea is generally not advisable during yellow alert. However, Met reports that the yellow alert for the area was issued based on the forecast for torrential rain and thunderstorm, and that seas are not expected to be rough.

Met forecasts generally scattered rain, isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms in central and southern atolls. The weather is expected to be fine in the north.

Surface winds will vary between north-east to easterly at 13 – 23 miles per hour in central atolls and 7 – 17 miles per hour elsewhere. Winds may gust 35 miles per hour during showers

Seas are expected to be rough in central atolls and moderate over the rest.

Met advises seafarers in central atolls to take necessary precautions against strong winds and rough seas.
