NGO Jamiyyathu Salaf has requested main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party to protest against the ban on civil servants wearing face-veils in the workplace.
President of Jamiyyathu Salaf, Abdulla Bin Mohamed Ibrahim, in his letter to MDP asked it to protest against the government’s policy on face-veils, if it believed it was a constitutional right for women who wear face-veils to be able to work in civil service positions of their choosing.
He said in the letter that two female teachers were recently removed from their posts as public school teachers; and asked MDP’s opinion regarding the issue.
Jamiyyathu Salaf said banning face-veils was a violation of women’s rights.
The NGO said everyone needed to accept the sad truth that there was no room in the government for any civil servant or anyone who wishes to join civil service to wear Islamic clothing, despite it being an Islamic country.
