Maldivian: Less support for the southern flights

National Airline, Maldivian has said that they are not receiving the expected support for their domestic flights to Gan International Airport from the southern atolls.

In November 2016, Sri Lankan Airlines started direct flights between Colombo and Gan International. Since Colombo is the transit hub in the region, passengers can now go anywhere in the world from Gan airport without coming to the capital.

The biggest domestic flight operation in the country, Maldivian, previously had a network of flights from the atolls to Velana International Airport at the capital. But when Gan Airport started on the international schedule, late last year, Maldivian said that they intend to connect other regional airports to Gan.

General Manager of Island Aviation, run under Maldivian, Abdul Haaris told Sun Media today that even with the travel opened for Gan from Laamu, Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, there have not been much support.

But if the demands are there for a flight, Haaris said that those flights would be flying to Gan.
