Customs Office to open at Hanimadhoo Airport

A decision has been made to build an office of the Maldives Customs Service at Hanimadhoo Airport to provide better service at the airport.

Speaking on Sun TV’s 50 Minute program, Senior Superintendent of the Customs Service, Abdulla Shareef said that x-ray screening and other important services are available at the international airport even if all of the services are yet not available at the international airports in the country but a special Customs Building would be built at the Hanimadhoo International Airport this year.

Regarding the Customs operations with the Maldives Police Service, Superintendent Shareef said that in the last three years, a total of 53 kg of drugs were seized from 43 attempts at smuggling and arrested 41 people and there are numerous efforts to stop the drugs coming into the country.

Highlighting the e-Gate at the Red and Green Zones, the Superintendent said that the current technology used at the ports makes it easier to stop the drugs coming in.

Superintendent Shareef said that the efforts at the passenger terminals seize about 79,000 bottles and cans of alcohol along with other illegal imports.

He noted the support from the Police and MNDF in such operations.
