Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam has said that abolishment of the Parliament would be better than MPs incessantly shouting at one another at the Parliament.
Today’s Parliament session was postponed three times due to raised voices and arguments by MPs.
When it finally commenced at 13:00, Siyam raised a point of order and said that the poor conduct of MPs contributes to the deterioration of the disciplinary standards of viewers of the Parliament sessions.
He said that MPs should act as exemplary figures, and noted that while they speak on behalf of their respective political parties at the Parliament, it is not the political parties that elected them as Members of Parliament.
“There has been no order at the Parliament since this morning. MPs attend the sessions not with the intention of working for the benefit of the citizens. It would be better to abolish the Parliament. Is this the Parliament of the people of the country? We have to improve in terms of discipline. The disciplinary standard of children and adults who watch these sessions is declining with every passing day. Why don’t we act as better examples here at the Parliament? We are paid high salaries. Who here was elected on behalf of his political party? It is the citizens of the country who elected you,” Siyam said.
Today’s session had to be suspended after three tries due to raised voices, exchange of heated arguments and use of offensive language by MPs.
