Former Managing Director of Works Corporation, Abdulla Jawid is to be prosecuted over alleged corruption in the financial transaction to purchase two excavators for the corporation.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a statement this Wednesday saying their investigation into the case uncovered corruption in the transaction.
ACC said that while rate set by Maldives Monetary Authority for purchase of USD at the time had been MVR 12.85, the two excavators were bought from a private company at the rate of MVR 13.75.
This meant Works Corporation paid MVR 358,200 more than required for the excavators, said ACC.
ACC said its investigation showed the transaction was made under the undue influence of the MD of Works Corporation at the time, Jawid, with the intent of profit to a party.
The commission’s report did not name the company from which the excavators were purchased.
Jawid is son-in-law of Deputy Speaker of People’s Majlis, MP Reeko Moosa Manik.
