4 Sri Lankans missing from boat found near Thuraakunu

Parliamentary representative of Sri Lanka’s Ampara district and Deputy Minister of Sports, Habeeb Mohamed Mohamed Harees has announced the Sir Lankan fishing boat found near Maldivian island H. A. Thuraakunu originally had six men onboard – and that four of the men were missing.

Harees reported that the fishing boat carrying fishermen from Kalmunai in Ampara district had gone missing on December 24, 2016.

The boat was later found with two of the fishermen on board at 3:45 am on January 4 by

Maldivian boat “Kandu Roadhi” from 30 miles outside Thuraakunu.

The two Sri Lankan fishermen rescued are now under the care of police in Dhidhdhoo.

Sri Lankan media reports Harees is set to travel to Maldives to look over the arrangements to take the men back to Sri Lanka.

Harees said he will be reaching out to Maldivian National Defense Force for help in search and rescue of the four men still missing.
