People’s Majlis Standing Committee on Government Accountability has today summoned the senior officials of Hiriya School Management for questioning, following the Huraa tragedy, in which Ali Nazim, the Principal and four students of the school drowned to death at sea a few days ago, while they were on an outing at Huraa to do the works of a Fisheries Science project.
Aishath Shaheen Hameed, Deputy Principal, Ahveeva Abdul Ghafur, Deputy Principal, and Aishath Waheeda, Leading Teacher, were the officials who were questioned today afternoon.
The questioning was conducted in a closed session into which journalists were not allowed.
The Committee has decided to question Hiriya School Board as well. Nazeer, President of the School Board, and Ahmed “Hiriga” Zahir, Deputy President of the Board shall be questioned tomorrow.
According to the People’s Majlis administration, the Committee has decided to question the management and School Board of Hiriya School to see whether there has been any negligence on the part of the school management and Board in the tragic incident at Huraa.
The Maldives Police Services and the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF) have also been conducting investigations into the matter, and the Ministry of Education has already established a special Committee to enquire into compliance with safety regulations in the organization of the trip that 32 students, the Principal and 8 expatriate teachers undertook to Huraa on Friday.
