Gateway to discard textbooks containing info on Christianity, Buddhism

The new Gateway International School in Hulhumale’ – set up in collaboration with the Gateway College in Sri Lanka – has made the decision to replace the Social Studies textbooks brought in for the students and replace it with the uniform social studies textbooks issued by Ministry of Education.

The Social Studies textbooks distributed to students of Gateway International School caused controversy when it was found to contain information on Christianity and Buddhism.

Principle of Gateway International School, Mohamed Rasheed reported to “Sun” this Saturday that the school management had decided to replace the controversial textbooks with the Social

Studies text books issued by Ministry of Education for the academic year 2017.

The original decision had been to use the textbooks used by Gateway in Sri Lanka for all subjects except for Dhivehi Language and Islamic Studies.

Rasheed said that custom Social Studies textbooks which did not contain information on religions other than Islam would be used by the Gateway International School starting academic year 2018.

Rasheed provided assurances to parents the school would not be teaching anything to students considered disrespectful to Islam.
