China has said that they are surprised by the concerns raised by Indian journalists over the leasing of the Maldivian island of Feydhoofinolhu to a Chinese company to develop a resort.
Speaking at a press conference today held by the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives to commemorate the new year, Ambassador Wang Fukang said that he is aware that the island was leased to a Chinese company.
The Ambassador said that he believes the Chinese company that took the lease intends to develop tourism and there are three more Chinese companies operating in Maldivian tourism.
While some Indian media outlets have reported raising concerns saying that giving an island close to the main airport of the country as a danger to the strategic interests of India in reference to foreign relation politicians in the Indian government.
In response, the Chinese Ambassador said that the Indian attention on a Maldivian tourism lease with a Chinese company is very surprising.
The Chinese Ambassador said that he believes the Maldives is a popular tourist destination and so is always looking for foreign investors and is an opportunity open to the whole world.
