One of the two people that was arrested following a chemical attack on a woman in Shaviyani atoll Lhaimagu has been released.
Maldives Police Service arrested two men of the ages 21 and 23 in relation to the attack in the early hours of 24 December 2016.
Police said that the man was released on Friday night after collecting all the information needed for the investigation.
The court gave a duration of seven days to conduct the investigation with the now freed man in custody. The other man, the 23-year-old, was remanded by ten days.
The chemical attack was on the face of the President of the Lhaimagu Women’s Development Committee, Haleema Adam. Police said that She was attacked with stain remover.
Following the attack, Haleema was treated at the Haa Dhaau Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.
Police said that the attack would be investigated as a serious crime and while the Maldives Police Service strictly condemns such action, human rights and women’s rights organizations has called to bring the people responsible to justice.
