Parties advice EC to withdraw its appeal over election postponement

Political parties have advised Elections Commission (EC) to withdraw its file for appeal over the Civil Court order to postpone the Local Council Election.

Member of EC, Ahmed Akram reported to “Sun” that all the political parties which participated in the national advisory committee meeting this Monday morning advised EC to withdraw its file for appeal with High Court.

Political parties which participated in the meeting includes Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Adhaalath Party (AP), Jumhoory Party (JP) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – which had filed the original case with Civil Court asking for a two-month postponement to the election.

According to Akram, President of EC said that a decision would be made after discussion regarding the advice provided by the committee members.

Akram said that political parties had advised EC to withdraw its file for appeal and re-announce

a new date for the Local Council Election.

EC filed the appeal with High Court, warning a postponement would lead to gross wastage of State funds.
