Deputy Chairperson of MDP, Ali Niyaz has been put under house arrest for seven days.
His attorney, Abdulla Haseen told Sun Media that his client was put under house arrest by the Criminal Court tonight.
Niyaz was arrested while protesting in front of the MDP hall calling to hasten the Local Council Election.
He was arrested for calling for mass gathering at locations where mass gatherings have been banned and attempting to create civil unrest.
Under the amendment to the Law of Public Gathering, it is illegal to hold protest rallies in Malé City without prior permission from the government.
