Post-mortems will begin before end of the year: Police

The Police have said that before the end of the year, post-mortems will begin to be carried out on mysterious deaths in Maldives.

Police Media Official Hassan Haneef said that Islamic Ministry has no objections to carrying out post-mortems, and that discussions are ongoing with the health sector on how this can be implemented.

“Preparations are underway to begin conducting post-mortems, and it will begin before the end of the year,” Haneef said.

He said that foreign experts in this field will be brought to Maldives.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that post-mortem is allowed in Islam in certain situations, and that he had advised the Police to proceed with implementing this examination.

According to Shaheem, in Islam post-mortems can be conducted if a person was murdered and his cause of death is unknown, and if a person dies of a sickness which had not been identified.

“Post-mortems are allowed under these two circumstances. A Saudi Arabian Scholars Council has allowed it as well. Outside of these circumstances, it cannot be done unless permitted by the relatives of the deceased,” Shaheem said.

Seven people have been killed in the Maldives so far this year.
