Economic Ministry has said that they are receiving reports of staple goods being sold above the controlled price.
The Deputy Minister of the Economic Ministry, Adam Thaufeeq told Sun Media that they are monitoring and ordering not to do it following the complaints of staple goods being sold above the controlled price.
Deputy Minister Thaufeeq said that they are not taking any steps aside from ordering amendment.
He said that most complaints are from Malé City and the complaints coming from the atolls are lower.
The government decided to cut the subsidies on the staple goods and give subsidy to the poor alone. But the staple goods are allowed to be sold at a price decided by the state.
But a number of businesses are not abiding with the government prices and selling rice kilos priced at MVR 7.96 per kg at MVR 9-10. And while the sugar is being sold above the MVR 8 set by the state, flour is being sold for MVR 7-8 when the state price is MVR 5.96.
The prices for staple goods to be sold in the atolls are higher than the capital Malé. But some businesses are selling at much higher prices according to some.
