Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has gone into Jumhoory Party headquarters this Sunday morning to meet JP Leader, Qasim Ibrahim.
Spokesperson for JP, Ali Solih reported that Maumoon was set to start meeting with Qasim “shortly”.
He gave no details regarding the nature of the meeting.
This is the first time for Maumoon and Qasim to meet after the last Presidential Election.
The meeting comes at a time of great divide within PPM, leading to formation of two factions – Maumoon’s faction and President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s faction.
Court has awarded President Yameen with control over running of PPM, deeming Maumoon as “incompetent”.
Maumoon, who campaigned to bring President Yameen to power, has publicly announced that he had taken back his support for the government.
Support from Maumoon, along with Qasim had been key in securing President Yameen’s seat.
JP has announced that as a “responsible opposition political party”, it was open for discussion with any party.
