President: Take your brains when you vote

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has asked for careful consideration before casting the vote in the upcoming Local Council Elections.

President Yameen, who is currently on a trip to H. Dh. Atoll and Sh. Atoll, officially inaugurated the H. Dh. Kurinbee Harbor this Tuesday afternoon.

In his speech during the inauguration, President Yameen asked that everyone “take brains” with them when they go to the polling stations.

He asked that everyone give careful consideration to what is right, what has happened in the past, and the contributions the candidates will provide to betterment before casting the vote.

“We have seen the Local Council Elections. During our short history, we have seen how we elect local councilors and seen major projects needed for the development of the islands go unfulfilled due to conflicting political ideology,” said President Yameen.

He said that the people needed to elect local councilors who will work with the government to bring development to the islands.

He said that some politicians fixate on overthrowing the government under the ruse of making the government accountable, leaving behind the more important question of the effectiveness of development projects run by the government.

“Always; about the harsh punishments meted out through Defamation Bill, about the rights of criminals – something like that. They are always involved in things which will bring only ruin,” said President Yameen.

Local Council Elections will be held on January 14, 2017.
