Umar does a ‘Trump’, deletes tweets after backlash

Local politician Umar Naseer has made a blunder along the same lines as the US presidential candidate Donald Trump, and has deleted derogatory comments against women and former Maldivian presidents he made via his official twitter account after he was called out on it by other Twitter users.

In two tweets he sent on last Monday – which has since been deleted – the former Minister of Home Affairs commented that wine, women and wealth were the “3 W’s” which turned good people bad.

In his first tweet, Umar referred to former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and said that “wine made a President resign” and referred to current Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and said that “wealth made a President politically blind”.

In a second tweet sent three hours later, Umar referred to the first President of Maldives, Mohamed Amin Didi as a “womanizing president” “beaten to death in the Maldives”.

The tweets created a huge fervor in the social media website Twitter with people unleashing criticism over his comments, which the people considered disrespectful and sexist.

Even Yumna Maumoon, who, along with Umar is backing Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in the divide within the ruling party criticized the tweets.

She tweeted that she found the remarks sexist.

Umar has since deleted the controversial tweets.
