A complaint has been filed on behalf of Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom with Elections Commission, calling the PPM council meeting chaired over by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as invalid.
The letter of complaint, signed by Secretary-General of PPM Abdul Aleem – appointed by Maumoon – calls the PPM council meeting chaired over by President Yameen in Dharubaaruge last Sunday night, October 16, as invalid.
The letter says that as per PPM regulation, only the Leader of PPM can call a council meeting, and that the Advisor of PPM – Yameen – has no authority in running of the party.
The complaint therefore calls to declare the council meeting, and the decisions passed during the meeting as invalid.
EC has also been given official notification of the decisions made during the PPM council meeting chaired by Maumoon on Sunday afternoon – including the appointment of Abdul Aleem as PPM’s new Secretary-General, and dismissal of MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla as Deputy Leader of PPM.
Dismissal of Ibrahim Yoosuf as President of PPM’s Youth Council, dismissal of Zahid Rameez from PPM council, and appointment of Umar Naseer to the PPM council was also informed to EC.
Meanwhile, in the council meeting chaired by Yameen, the council moved to appoint
Nilandhoo MP Dr. Abdulla Khaleel as the new Secretary-General of PPM, and nominated
PPM Parliamentary Group Leader, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla to represent PPM during the all-party talks.
PPM office had earlier announced that Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon and Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim would be representing PPM in the all-party talks.
