Infant dies in Children’s Shelter

A five-month infant in State custody at the Children’s Shelter in Hulhumale’ has passed away.

Sun Media has confirmed the information from both the Police and Ministry of Gender and Family, but neither of the authorities has been forthcoming with details.

“Sun” has been informed that police received a complaint from Children’s Shelter at 11:14 am, this Monday, over the infant having breathing difficulties.

The infant had been dead when taken to Hulhumale’ Hospital by police in emergency.

The case is under investigation, but there have been no reports of any outward injuries so far.

Gender Ministry said that the death would be investigated and those responsible would be held accountable. They said that the necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of the children at the orphanage.

Children’s Shelter opened in Hulhumale’ earlier this year houses about 85 children under the age of 10 years.

Recently, cases of runaways and climbing the over 20-foot wall by the children at the orphanage was surfaced and the Gender Ministry took measures to stop them.
