Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Ali Waheed has been charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act, with the first hearing in the case scheduled for this Monday, October 17.
Ali Waheed has been living in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom soon after his release from police detention after arrest after the opposition protests on May 1, 2015.
Customs has had his Maldivian passport revoked in September 22.
Though the exact cause of the criminal charges against Ali Waheed is unclear at the moment, it is believed to be connected with the protests on May Day, 20115.
Court schedule shows the case against Ali Waheed had been filed with Criminal Court on September 18.
Ali Waheed, Leader of Adhaalath Party – Sheikh Imran Abdulla and Deputy Leader of Jumhoory Party – Ameen Ibrahim were all arrested after the May Day protests for allegedly inciting violence during the protest leading to attacks on police officers and damage to property through their speeches.
Imran is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence after being prosecuted on the charge, under Anti-Terror Act.
