One millionth tourist to arrive on Sunday

The one millionth tourist to visit Maldives in 2016 will arrive in the country this Sunday, October 16.

Maldives first broke the one million tourist arrival milestone back in 2014, and has been receiving more than one million tourists per year ever since.

The tourism industry of the Maldives hopes to go further this year and reach 1.5 million tourist arrivals.

Latest statistics, published by Ministry of Tourism for the month of August shows 112,282 tourist arrivals that month, which is slight 1.7 percent higher when compared to the 110,432 tourist arrivals in July.

Most of tourists who visited Maldives in August were from China.

A total 36,217 Chinese tourists visited Maldives in August.

The second highest number of tourists – a total 8,825 tourists – came from United Kingdom, trailed by German and Italian tourists.

India supplied the most number of tourists to Maldives from Asia, after China, in August, with 4,175 tourist arrivals, followed by Japan.

Meanwhile, there was a slight decrease in number of Saudi Arabian tourists to the Maldives in August with 3,223 tourist arrivals in August and 3,247 tourist arrivals in July.

The figure is still notably higher compared to the less than 250 Saudi Arabian tourists who visited the country back in June.
