President: Nashid’s death is a great loss to Maldivian music industry

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has honored Maldivian music legend Ahmed Nashid, calling his death a great loss to the music industry of the country.

Nashid – who revolutionized the Maldivian industry with his band Zero Degree Atolls - passed away at the age of 53 years on Monday, October 10, after a long battle with cancer.

He died at ADK Hospital after being taken there for treatment after his condition deteriorated.

President Yameen has sent his condolences to Nashid’s family.

He noted the great contribution Nashid made to the music industry of the country, and the inspiration he provided to the youth of the country – especially those working in the music industry.

Nashid, who received the National Award of Recognition for his contribution to the music industry in 1990, started his music career while studying at Majeediyya School.

He made a name for himself both in Maldives and abroad, winning a number of international awards on the way.
