Repair work on Hinmafushi Prison at a standstill

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has said that repair work on K. Hinmafushi Asseyri Prison – designed to hold a number of high-profile prisoners – was at a standstill.

High-profile inmates; former Minister of Defense – Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, former Minister of Defense – Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, and Leader of Adhaalath Party – Al-Sheikh Imran Abdulla were transferred to house arrest so that repair work could be carried out on the prison.

But that was some seven months ago.

MCS, which previously said that the repair work would take only a short period of time, spoke to “Sun” this Monday and said that the work had been at a standstill with the authority unable to obtain resources it needed for the work.

Information officer of MCS, Ahmed Luqmaan did not go into detail over the shortage of resource which has resulted in the delay.

Luqmaan said that he cannot say when the work will resume, or when the work will be completed.
