Four subsidy form collection points have been set up in Male’ after the government’s decision to cut subsidies on staples to the general population and allocate them only for the poor.
CEO of National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), Mujthaba Jaleel said that subsidy forms can be submitted to four collection points set up in Male’ – NSPA headquarters, Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal, Vilimale’ Ferry Terminal, and near Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) headquarters.
Subsidy forms from the atolls can be submitted to council headquarters.
Mujthaba said that the poor would get subsidies on staples once they submit the relevant documents along with the form.
Subsidies on staples will be provided in accordance with “Regulation on providing financial assistance so those living in poverty can purchase food.”
Only those whose income and living condition falls within the poverty range set by NSPA are eligible for the subsidy.
An individual living in poverty will hereafter receive MVR 40 per month and households will receive MVR 240 per month in subsidies.
State Trading Organization (STO) has announced that will the change, the price of rice per kilo will rise from MVR 3.98 to MVR 7.96, the price of sugar per kilo from MVR 4.50 to MVR 8, and the price of flour per kilo from MVR 3.50 to MVR 5.96.
The prices will be higher in the atolls.
