Government has decided to give subsidies on Rice, Sugar and Flour to the poor alone.
Deputy Minister of the Economic Ministry, Adam Thaufeeq told Sun Media today that starting from Saturday, subsidies would be given the poor alone on Rice, Sugar and Flour.
From then on, the price of Rice would be going up from MVR 3.95 to MVR 7.96 per kilogram.
And the price of a kilogram of Sugar would go up from MVR 4.50 to MVR 8 while the price of Flour would be raised from MVR 3.50 to MVR 5.96 per kilogram.
He said that the prices are currently set with the inclusion of the subsidies.
Deputy Minister Thaufeeq said that the subsidies would be given to the selected through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA). The details were not shared.
CEO of NSPA, Mujuthaba Jaleel said that the details on the subsidies would be revealed soon.
The price of the main foods Rice, Sugar and Flour have been low in the country since the government pays a large portion of it’s price. And so the resorts and expatriates use the subsidy cards which are paid for by the government.
Thaufeeq said that the subsidies would be received by those who need it in the future.
The government says that the money saved from subsidies would be used for the development of the people.
