Suadh Mohamed, 22, has had two of his toes amputated in a surgery after suffering severe injuries in the accident in G. A. Vilingili on September 12.
A family member of Suadh spoke to “Sun” and said that Suadh had undergone surgery to amputate his toes in a hospital in India this Thursday. He said that Suadh was now being kept at the Intensive Care Unit in recovery. And that his condition wasn’t good.
The family said that the doctors had told them his toes could have been saved had he been provided proper emergency care.
“The doctors over here said that they wouldn’t have had to completely amputate the toes if he had been taken to them within two or three days of the accident,” said the family member.
The family has accused the doctor from G. A. Atoll Hospital, Dr. Sailendra Maharjan of negligence in the case.
Suad’s father, Mohamed Nazim had spoken in an earlier interview with “Sun” and said that the
doctor had delayed emergency care – opting to go jogging - and had returned only to tell them that Suad could only be treated in Nepal.
Nazim said that Suadh’s toes had been nearly severed off his feet in the accident, but that the doctor had only wrapped a piece of cloth around it.
The family said that they had faced a number of issues including the doctor’s initial refusal to fill the Aasandha form and make arrangements for a chartered flight to Male’.
Meanwhile, Manager of G. A. Atoll Hospital, Shafaaz Moosa said that the hospital had followed what the doctor advised them to do. And that he did not have the authority to act against the order of the doctor.
Shaafiz said that an internal investigation was being carried out to find out if the doctor had been negligent.
In addition to amputating his toes, Suad also needs to get more surgery done on his leg and eyes.
He has multiple fractures on his right leg, leading to the skin and muscles on his leg being torn.
He has also fractured his collarbone, and his cheekbone –leading to the broken cheekbone being embedded inside.
