Safaath selected for team of UN Young Leaders of the SDGs

Maldivian youngster, Safaath Ahmed Zahir has been chosen among young leaders of United Nations member countries promote Sustainable Development Goals.

Safaath was selected by UN as part of a 17-member team of young leaders from countries such as India, United Kingdom, Kenya, Dominican Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Colombia, America, Bangladesh, Uganda and Mexico.

The 17 youg leaders were selected from among over 18,000 applications that were sent in, and marks the first time for UN to select youth leaders to push for the Sustainable Development Goals.

The selection was announced during the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York.

UN said that the responsibilities of the young leaders include working with Youth Envoy Office appointed by Secretary-General of UN to increase awareness among youth and promote the Sustainable Development Goals.

Safaath is a remarkable young woman who won the Queen’s Young Leaders Award by the UK Queen, Elizabeth II, earlier this year.

She was selected as a young leader for her work in advocating for the rights of women and women empowerment.

Safaath, who previously served as Secretary-General of Women on Boards, is now working on founding an organization to promote women’s role in policy-level and decision making positions – Women and Democracy.
