Construction of L. Fonadhoo water system has been kicked off in a special ceremony participated by Minister of Environment Toriq Ibrahim, Minister of Defense Adam Shareef Umar, Vilimafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla and the President of L. Atoll Council on Tuesday night.
In his speech at L. Atoll Education Center, Minister Toriq said that all those households in Fonadhoo that did not have clean water would have it by the end of the project.
“All households in Fonadhoo will have access to clean water by the end of this project. The clean water will be received on a sustainable basis,” said Toriq.
He said that the country only had sewerage systems in 30 islands and water system in five islands when the Progressive Party of Maldives came to power, and that the current government had established sewerage systems in 10 more islands and water systems in 10 more islands.
Toriq said that L. Atoll had gone through huge progress, evident by looking at the main road.
He said that the construction of the main road would bring further development to the atoll.
MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who represents Fonadhoo, spoke about development projects in Fonadhoo and nearby islands in his speech.
He said that repair work on Maamendhoo Harbor and construction of the island’s sewerage system was near completion.
Abdul Raheem has that the people of Fonadhoo were thirsty for development and progress, and had always been willing to work with any government towards that end.
The MVR 47,139,214 project to establish a water system in Fonadhoo was contracted to Sierra Maldives in March, 2016.
They have been tasked with completing the work within one year.
