The young man from G. A. Vilingli injured in a road accident on September 12, Suad Mohamed, 22, is to be taken to India for further treatment.
Suad’s father, Mohamed Nizam spoke to “Sun” and said that he had now received the Aasandha form to travel to India for treatment, and that was looking to go there as soon as possible.
Nizam said that the doctors from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) had told him that he had been brought to Male’ too late, and that the doctors at G. A. Atoll hospital had not sewn back his two toes – which had all but been detached in the accident.
Suad now needs to have the two toes amputated.
“The doctors from IGMH told me that they had only wrapped a piece of cloth over the toes,” said Nazim.
Nazim said that he had discussed his son’s condition with neurosurgeon Ali Niyaf – who told him that there was no other way than to amputate the two toes.
In addition to amputating his toes, Suad also needs to get surgery done on his leg and eyes as well – once he gets to India.
He has multiple fractures on his right leg, leading to the skin and muscles on his leg being torn.
He has also fractured his collarbone, and his cheekbone –leading to the broken cheekbone being embedded inside.
Nazim said that his son was immediately taken to the G. A. Atoll Hospital after the accident, and that the orthopedist at the hospital – Sailendra Maharjan – instead of providing him with emergency care – had gone jogging. And had returned only to tell them that Suad can only be treated in Nepal.
Nazim said that the doctor had even refused to fill the Aasandha form and make arrangements for a chartered flight to take Suad to Male’ for treatment.
He said that the hospital had made the arrangement after hours of begging.
Nazim said that the ambulance had been broken down, meaning that the family had to make their own transport arrangements to taken Suad from the jetty to Kuddoo Airport.
He said that they had not been provided the assistance of a doctor and nurse to accompany Suad as he was transported to Male’.
“Suad cannot stand up. He cannot sit. He can stay lying down. Even as he was being taken to the flight he kept saying he would not be able to sit on a seat. And then the captain of the flight said that he wouldn’t bear responsibility for any injury. And then it left,” said Nazim.
He said that they had contacted the G. A. Hospital and informed them that the plane left without them, and that the they were told to return back to the hospital, and to make their own transport arrangements.
The family contacted the police at that point.
“A doctor and nurse came to the airport and started giving him treatment a long time after the police went to G. A. Atoll Hospital,” said Nazim.
But the doctors at IGMH had informed the family that Suad had been brought in too late.
“What I just told you happened in front of multiple eyewitnesses. So we are saying openly that Suad has to have his toes amputated because of negligence on the part of the doctor,” said Nazim.
Manager of G. A. Atoll Hospital, Shafaaz Moosa spoke to “Sun” and said that the hospital had followed what the doctor advised them to do.
He said that he did not have the authority to act against the order of the doctor.
Shaafiz said that an internal investigation was being carried out to find out if the doctor had been negligent.
