Ministry of Education has said today that the task of conducting various special programs to teach school students various life skills shall in the future be handed over to resorts interested in conducting them. Life skills such as swimming would be taught to students under these programs.
In a press conference held today at Hiriya School in the wake of an incident that occurred in K. Atoll Huraa, in which four students and the Principal of Hiriya School drowned to death at sea, Shifa Mohamed, Minister of Education, said that some resorts had already expressed their interest in initiating such programs for school goers.
“In various parts of the Maldives, including resorts, there are instructors trained to provide training in areas such as swimming and first-aid. We will assign such persons the task of conducting such programs for students”, said the Minister.
The Minister also noted the importance of acquainting teachers in the same skills. She said that the sad incident of Huraa should be considered by a valuable lesson by all of us.
Four students of Hiriya School and the school Principal died while at Huraa doing the work of a Fisheries Science project. 32 students participated in the trip.
