Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that in order for the Maldives to become a full-fledged democracy, the human rights need to be respected and the protection granted by the Constitution must be provided to the people.
In a statement issued by the HRCM on the occasion of the World Democracy Day being celebrated today, human rights were noted as one of the most important basis of a democracy.
The HRCM said that the separation of the powers with respected to a government elected by the people would achieve success to human rights.
The role of media is great is establishing such a system according to the HRCM.
HRCM said that while the theme of this year’s Democracy Day, Democracy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aligns with the no. 17 of the millennium goals, a lot of effort has to be put in to achieve it.
And so the protection of children, safe society, justice and transparent policies, responsible institutes and the work against corruption and organized crime has to be stepped up. And policies and laws has to be made against discriminations and in favor of freedom of information.
