Nasheed and Maumoon denies allegations of monetary trade between the two

Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom have denied the allegations made by Al-Jazeera that President Nasheed paid President Maumoon to join the opposition coalition.

A report based on the Al-Jazeera documentary on Maldives “Stealing Paradise” by it’s creator, Will Jordan said that Nasheed and Maumoon are in discussion to form a coalition.

President Maumoon tweeted earlier tonight refuting the allegations by saying that he has neither asked or be asked to receive money to make any political affiliation.

The report based on anonymous sources said that in the said discussions, President Maumoon requested that President Nasheed give USD 100,000 (MVR 1.5 million) to Maumoon as a show of good faith. And Nasheed gave USD 50,000 from the amount that was asked.

But the former President Nasheed refuted and denied the accounts of the report by saying that no financial transaction ever took place between President Maumoon and himself. And their topic of conversation has always been of democracy.
