Spokesperson for President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali has denied the allegations against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom by Al-Jazeera’s investigative unit in their documentary ‘Stealing Paradise’.
Al-Jazeera raised allegations of corruption, embezzlement and money laundering against Yameen in ‘Stealing Paradise’, which it released on Wednesday.
Spokesperson, Muaz said that the entire documentary was based on false allegations raise by a couple of Maldivians living abroad, and that there was no proof to any of the allegations.
He said that the President’s Office would be releasing an official regarding the allegations, shortly.
Al-Jazeera’s investigative unit said that the documentary was based on secret recordings and information collected from three phones which belonged to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor.
It claimed that information from the three phones were copied and given to them by source after Adeeb gave his three phones to an ally with orders to smuggle them out of the country before his arrest.
The documentary alleges corruption within the highest level of the State, from President Yameen to former VP Adeeb to Maldives Monetary Authority to Maldives Police Service.
