Hearings end in trial against ex-BML manager

Hearings in the trial against former manager of Bank of Maldives, F. Nilandhoo Branch, Qasim Abdul Kareem was concluded on Monday.

State is prosecuting Qasim for obtaining information illegally and revealing the information illegally, in a breach of confidentiality of one of the bank’s customers.

Qasim’s attorney, Ahmed Nazim Abdul Sattar said that possible sentence for Qasim was discussed during the last hearing, held at Criminal Court on Monday.

He said that the Criminal Court would be issuing its verdict next.

The trial was held behind closed doors as per the request of Prosecutor General’s Office, making details of the trial hard come by.

Meanwhile, Transparency International called for the State to retract the charges against Qasim last Sunday, as he was a whistleblower who should be commended for his courage in unearthing corruption and embezzlement of State funds.
