Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has said that two Maldivian large scale drug dealers have been arrested this year.
Speaking at a ceremony held by National Drug Agency (NDA) to mark the Day Against Drug Abuse, Riyaz said that large amounts of drugs were seized from the 112 locations which were checked under court warrants, and that individuals were checked 6311 times for suspicion of possession of drugs.
The Commissioner did not disclose any details of the two Maldivians arrested this year.
Police have however earlier announced details of two people arrested for drug trafficking, who are Adnan Moosa, 55, who was caught with 1kg of drugs, and Mohamed Saleem, 53, who was accused of trading small bullet drugs on a large scale.
The case relating to Saleem has been sent to the Prosecutor General.
The Commissioner said that Police Intelligence have commenced planned operations to prevent drug-related crimes, and that the Police will not hesitate to detain and produce top drug dealers in court.
He said that the Police are professional in their efforts to free the Maldivian society of the dangers of drugs.
He mentioned that preparations are being made to involve sniffer dogs to conduct a special operation to prevent drugs from coming into the country.
According to Journey, an NGO formed to assist drug users to recover, the percentage of kids going into drugs has not decreased in the Maldives.
