Prison officer arrested smuggling illegal drugs to Maafushi Prison

A prison officer working for Maldives Correctional Service has been arrested for attempting to smuggle in illegal drugs to K. Maafushi Prison.

Police reported that the 30-year-old man was arrested from in front of Maafushi Prison at 4:30 pm on Wednesday in a joint operation run by Maafushi Police Station and Police Intelligence.

He was arrested based on intel police received that he was attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the prison.

Police said that the officer had dropped something on the ground when they attempted to do a body check. And that the item turned out to be a taped package containing 92 pills of illegal drugs.

The police also said that urine analysis of the officer came out positive for two types of narcotics.

Maafushi Prison has extended his remand period to 12 more days.
