Minister of Home Affairs, Azleen Ahmed has declared that the country’s security forces were above influence, and that they had sworn an oath to defend Islam and the legitimate government of the country.
Speaking during the Channel 13 show “News Talk” on Wednesday night, Azleen said that the country’s military stood strong and united.
“Maldivian military and police officers are Maldivian. They are not mercenaries. They are beloved Maldivian citizens. They have Maldivian blood running through their veins, the passion and interest. They have sworn an oath to defend the holy religion of Islam and the constitutional government of Maldives. They cannot be played with, you see,” said Azleen.
He said that the opposition would fail in their attempts to sway the country’s security forces, no matter how much money they threw at their feet.
He said their willpower was stronger than that.
At a time of strong rumors that the current Maldivian government was at the brink of being toppled down, the new Minister of Home Affairs said that, “attempts to overthrow the government of this country by seeking the help of Christians and Jews” was simply unacceptable.
He said that efforts to overthrow the government was an attempt to destroy sources of income to the country such as the tourism industry.
He challenged Maldivian political leaders living in self-imposed exile to return back to the country and face President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government head-on.
“You cannot come to power without first gaining the love and admiration of the people of the country, no matter how much you plan coups. Why are they going to BBC or any other media and making reports alleging atrocities that have never taken place in the history of this country, placing blame on the innocent?” asked Azleen.
Azleen said that he was confident President Yameen win the Presidential Election 2018, making history as the first Maldivian President to fulfill all his promises to the people.
“Anyone in the opposition who want to come to power need to first prove themselves to the people. Compete President Yameen, politically. And then come. Tell us what your agenda is. President Yameen will, god willing, win over the others easily in 2018 after becoming the first Maldivian President to fulfill all his promises,” said Azleen.
