MDP celebrates anniversary and vows to return to government

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has celebrated its seventh anniversary, while vowing to return to power and to produce officials of the current government in court.

Last night’s ceremony started with a speech by MDP Spokesperson and Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy. He criticised the government and Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), and praised former President Mohamed Nasheed.

He said that HRCM is blind to Police brutality, but had sent the case pertaining to Nasheed, who did not harm anyone during his administration, to Prosecutor General (PG).

Speaking on how MDP was first formed, MDP Parliamentary Group President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that former President Gayoom sent the case to the Parliament when they first attempted to form political parties, and that only four MPs voted in favour of formation of political parties.

Solih said that MDP’s biggest accomplishment has been to bring the thirty year regime to an end.

MDP former President Ibrahim Ismail, MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik and Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed called to investigate the transfer of power and to produce senior officials of the government in court. They repeatedly said that MDP will return to power.

Participants also said a prayer and cut a cake during the ceremony.
