L. Kunahandhoo Council reports that the island has received no relief from flooding even after the use of five water pumps and after digging out six trenches.
Vice President of Kunahandhoo Council, Siruaam Saeed spoke to “Sun” on Wednesday and said that the ground of the island dropped in the middle, leading to all the floodwater being trapped in.
“Even the harbor area is on high ground, so what happens is the water is trapped in the middle, given how heavily it is raining,” said Siruaam.
He said that the floodwater had damaged household items in some homes, and become an inconvenience to students and office employees alike.
Siruaam said that water pumps were being used and trenches being dug up to provide a solution to the problem.
He noted that the effort was receiving massive support from civilians.
He said that the Council had decided to ask for assistance from National Defense Force.
National Meteorological Service forecasts rain and thunderstorms throughout the country, and has advised caution to sea travelers.
