NIC investigates death of detainee, family votes against postmortem

National Integrity Commission (NIC) has started investigating the death of Moosa Naeem, 55, from H. Filikurige of Male’ after he died while kept under detention at Dhoonidhoo Prison.

Moosa died from a heart attack in the early hours of last Tuesday.

A suspected narcotics smuggler, Moosa arrested on July 9, accused of attempting to smuggle eight kilos of narcotics into the country.

NIC inspected both Moosa’s body and his holding cell.

NIC media official spoke to “Sun” on Wednesday and said that NIC had started investigating the death on their own initiative, and confirmed that Moosa’s family had also filed the case with them after they started the investigation.

The media official stressed that NIC had not started the investigation due to suspicion of possible foul play, but said that a postmortem would be done on his body as per the family’s request.

Moosa’s family later decided not to do a postmortem of his body, opting instead to bury him after afternoon prayers this Wednesday.

Moosa’s family is suspicious of his death, but said that they were not ready to share the suspicions with the media yet.

A worker from the mortuary, where Moosa’s body is being kept, said that there were no signs of injury visible on his body.
