Lucas loses appeal, will remain in detention

Popular social media activist Shammoon Jaleel AKA Lucas Jaleell has lost his appeal of Criminal Court order to remand him to police detention.

Lucas was arrested for allegedly inciting fear and hatred within the hearts of the people of Maldives against the country’s security forces.

High Court made its ruling on Tuesday, declaring that there was no reason why the Criminal Court order to remand his for 15 more days in jail should be overturned.

High Court noted in their ruling that the judge did not only need to consider the best interest of the suspect, but that of the entire society when approving remand.

The Court said that police had submitted enough evidence to keep him under detention.
