South Galolhu MP, Ahmed Mahloof has sent the issue of his prison conviction to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
This has been confirmed by his lawyer.
Mahloof was served a four-month prison sentence and a six-month prison sentence – on separate cases involving obstructing police from performing their duty.
He was sentenced to four-months in prison after he was found guilty of refusing to board a police vehicle after a court appearance and attempting to flee captivity on April 3, 2015.
He was sentenced to six-months in prison after he was found guilty of pushing his way through police barricades and entering a restricted area during wide-spread protests in the capital, Male’, on March 25, 2015.
Mahloof is a key opposition politician, and the spokesperson of the Maldives United Opposition.
