Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that what he wants is not to overthrow the government, but to hold fair and independent elections.
Speaking at a ceremony organised by United States Institute of Peace in Washington last night as part of his current visit to the US, Nasheed expressed curiosity about who would win if an election was held right now.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that Nasheed will meet political groups in the US during his visit, including Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake, members of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate, and members of the International Republican Institute.
United States Institute of Peace is an independent conflict management centre created by Congress to prevent international conflict without resorting to violence.
Nasheed will return to Male’ on 1 July.
