Government seeks re-publisher for the Constitution

Government has announced that they are searching a third-party to re-publish the Constitution with the new amendments.

The announcement made from the Attorney General’s Office (AG Office) requested that those interested in re-publishing the Maldivian Constitution with the amendments given by the Attorney General’s Office come to the AG Office before 11 a.m. on 24 August to get the relevant information.

The number of copies that would be made is unclear so far.

Last year, two amendments were made to the Constitution. The first amendment being the age of candidacy for Presidency being set between 30-65 years.

Second amendment made last year was the amendment to allow foreigners to permanently own land in the Maldives according to which the projects that make investments over USD 1 million within the Maldives territory would be eligible to receive ownership of land if the project is allowed by law passed by the Parliament.

The amendment says that the person who receives ownership of land with certain conditions can give away the land to someone else.

And if the government wants to reclaim the land, it can be done under a court order after paying back a significant return.
