A complaint has been filed with the police against Public Service Media online website, over allegations that the organization made defamatory comments regarding former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed.
Police information officer Ismail Ali has confirmed that the complaint was filed with the police last Tuesday, but refused to reveal further details when asked whether the case was under investigation.
PSM has been accused of making defamatory comments against Nasheed in an article published on the website at 8:38 pm on August 11.
They are accused of misinterpreting speeches given by Nasheed in the article, which was allegedly pulled sometime that night.
PSM spokesperson Abdulla Rameez said that the organization did not want to make any official comment regarding the issue, as it was under investigation.
According to the recent amendment to law on defamation and freedom of speech, defamatory comments can be reported to police, who will conduct an investigation and send it to Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.
